Mastering Prompt Writing: The AI Skill Every Mortgage Broker Needs

Mastering Prompt Writing: The AI Skill Every Mortgage Broker Needs

In this week’s edition of The Mortgage Broker Broadcast, we’re diving deeper into the power of AI — and more specifically, the art of writing better prompts. This episode is part of our ongoing AI mini-series, designed to help mortgage brokers harness the practical benefits of AI tools like ChatGPT without the overwhelm or technical jargon.

I’m Craig Skelton, mortgage business owner, mentor, and coach. I help self-employed brokers and business owners build the business they truly want. Whether you’re just starting out or focused on scaling, this blog (and the podcast) is all about helping you grow, stay focused, and handle the real challenges of self-employment.

Why Prompt Writing Matters More Than You Think

Prompt writing is the bridge between what you want and what AI delivers. Think of ChatGPT like hiring a brand-new assistant: eager, fast, but totally unfamiliar with your tone, your clients, or your business. If you want quality support, you need to give it direction.

Good prompts save you time, reduce back-and-forth revisions, and most importantly, keep your content sounding like you. This is about working smarter, not harder.

The Four-Part Prompt Formula

To consistently get great results from AI, use this simple four-part formula:

  1. Role – Tell ChatGPT who it should act as.
    • “You are an experienced mortgage broker who communicates clearly with a friendly tone.”
  2. Task – Be specific about what you need.
    • “Write a blog post about the benefits of using a mortgage broker vs going direct to a lender.”
  3. Tone – Describe how the content should sound.
    • “Use a confident but down-to-earth tone, simple and relatable.”
  4. Context – Include audience, platform, or any relevant background.
    • “This is for first-time buyers aged 25-35 who are nervous about applying for a mortgage.”

Putting it all together:

“You are an experienced mortgage broker who communicates clearly and with a friendly tone. Write a short blog post about the benefits of using a broker over going direct to a lender. Use a confident but down-to-earth tone. This post is for first-time buyers aged 25 to 35 who are nervous about applying for a mortgage and don’t know what a broker does.”

Real-World Prompt Examples You Can Use This Week

Here are a few practical prompts you can try right now:

  • Follow-up Email “You are a mortgage broker. Write a friendly follow-up email to a couple after their first appointment. Remind them to upload their documents and confirm next steps. Keep it warm but professional.”
  • Social Media Post “You are a mortgage broker who works with self-employed clients. Write a 150-word LinkedIn post explaining how income is assessed for limited company directors. Keep it easy to understand and suitable for first-timers.”
  • Website Video Script “You are creating a homepage video. Write a short, friendly script introducing who you help, how you work, and why clients should choose you. Keep it under 60 seconds.”

Prompt Mistakes to Avoid

Even with the best formula, there are a few common traps:

  • Too Short  – One-liner prompts lead to vague answers. Be detailed.
  • No Tone or Direction – Without guidance, AI defaults to bland and generic.
  • No Editing – Don’t copy and paste AI output directly. Always personalise.
  • No Input from You – Your stories, your voice, your examples – these matter. Inject them.

Remember, AI should sound like you, not like a bot.

Build Your Own Prompt Library

Once you find prompts that work, save them! Build a Google Doc or use your notes app to collect prompts for:

  • Email templates
  • Social posts
  • Newsletter intros
  • Blog outlines

Over time, you’ll create a go-to library you can reuse and tweak, saving loads of time and mental effort.

This Week’s Challenge: Try It Yourself

Craft one high-quality prompt using the formula: Role, Task, Tone, Context. Use it to create something real — a post, an email, a script, anything you’ve been putting off. Then ask ChatGPT for two variations and test what works best.

And when you do it, let me know! Message me or tag me on LinkedIn — I’d love to hear how it’s going.
